Abstract

The mitotic microtubule-based spindle that separates genetic material at cell division in eukaryotic cells is an example of robust pattern formation that leads to structure for a critical function- cell division. Microtubule dynamics, motor interactions with the microtubule cytoskeleton and chromosomal dynamics have been shown in experiment and simulation to produce a variety of patterns. Recently however the role of chromosomal regulatory gradient has also begun to be explored. We can show that an iterative cycle of model-building, simulation, experimental design and quantification brings us closer to a “systems level” understanding of the modules that contribute to the assembly of the mitotic spindle as a whole.
